On 27 June 2002 the “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar” were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. At their annual meeting in Budapest the twenty-one delegates of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee approved the joint application by Stralsund and Wismar, thus following the recommendation of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), which underscored especially the cooperation between the two cities and their efforts to preserve and protect their architectural heritage, as well as the “exceptional universal value” of the ensembles themselves. However, ICOMOS also pointed out how fragile living old towns are. Protecting and sensitively developing our World Cultural Heritage sites will continue to demand great care. Stralsund and Wismar also earned great praise for their German World Cultural Heritage initiative, which puts into practice the World Heritage idea – our shared responsibility for the world’s heritage.
