Biologist and explorer Hermann K. Burmeister was born in 1807 in Stralsund. He held the post of professor of zoology in Halle, and was the last of the universal scholars. Through his own research and his work as head of the Natural History Museum of Buenos Aires he made a major contribution to the exploration of the interior of South America. His life and work are commemorated by an archive and an exhibition in the Burmeister House, a reconstructed gabled house.
