Vikings, islands and treasures

The Hiddensee Gold Jewelry

© Siegfried Mayska

The Viking treasure is mysterious today. Just as mysterious as the circumstances of its discovery in the 1870s on the island of Hiddensee. Did the fishermen really find it after the storm surge? Or did they always have it and simply have to sell it out of necessity after the storm surge? Well, the rather taciturn islanders will probably never reveal this secret. But the treasure can now be seen in the STRALSUND MUSEUM.
It is so valuable from an art historical perspective that it only found its way from the safe into the exhibition a few years ago and can now be admired in its original form. Experts agree that this jewelry, which bears both pagan and Christian symbols, can be attributed to the Viking King Harald Bluetooth. Around 970 AD he was King of Denmark and Norway represents the Christianization of the Danes.

There you will find out how this treasure ended up on the island of Hiddensee and later found its way to Stralsund and into what is now the STRALSUND MUSEUM.
