Playing Card Factory Museum

A Working Museum

© Spielkartenfabrik

More of a workshop than a museum. All of the historical machines are in use, giving a vivid impression of the working conditions in an old printing works. Visitors can look over the shoulders of the employees while they are working or take part in a guided tour. The playing card factory also offers workshops where you can print cards yourself. You can also visit changing exhibitions.

The history of the playing card factory goes back to the 18th century. In 1872, three companies were merged to form a joint-stock company. This company also took over the business in Halle and Altenburg. For reasons of space, production was moved to Altenburg in the 1930s, which is where the Altenburger Blatt, which is well-known today, is based. In the Cultural History Museum, just 500 meters away, an exhibition shows the history of playing card production in Stralsund.
