Treasures behind monastery walls

A museum that sheds light on the eventful history of the city and the region is the Stralsund Museum. At 150 years old, it is one of the oldest museums in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Special highlights include the Hiddensee gold jewelry, works by Caspar-David Friedrich and an entire museum building.

The Stralsund Museum is divided into three locations: the St. Catherine's Monastery and the Museum House in the historic old town, as well as the Stralsund Naval Museum on the Dänholm.

Catherine Monastery

In St. Catherine's Monastery, right in the heart of the old town, Viking goldsmithing is on display. Visitors can also learn more about Stralsund's city history, from medieval architecture to the Hanseatic period. But many rarities, such as the "Elblandschaft" by Caspar David Friedrich, are also among the museum's treasures.

As the largest single exhibit in the Stralsund Museum, the museum house invites visitors on a journey through 700 years of cultural history. In the exhibition, visitors can discover traces from the Gothic and Baroque eras and experience the lives of the house's former residents.

Navy Museum

Anyone who would like to learn more about the military history of Stralsund and Dänholm can visit the Stralsund Naval Museum. This is an outpost of the Stralsund Museum on the small island of Dänholm. The special features include originals of a naval helicopter and a torpedo boat.
